2021年度学位記授与 公衆衛生学研究科長 祝辞（2022年3月10日）
公衆衛生学研究科長 高橋 理
On behalf of the Graduate School of Public Health faculty and support staff, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to you all, the 2021 graduates, and to your families and friends. It is wonderful to celebrate this milestone with you all despite the COVID-19 crisis experienced across the country.
Recently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everything has changed. Working and studying from home are the new normal for many of us. I am proud that you have rallied around each other to continue learning, teaching, and serving. Your accomplishments are even more impressive as you had to carry them out during a worldwide crisis.
COVID-19 also gives us the opportunity to look at old problems in new ways in our society. The role of public health has become more significant than ever, along with the various clinical professions, such as medicine and nursing. We had not concerned ourselves about our medical supply chain until there was a lack of gloves and masks, and we did not worry about the health care system until the public health centers were put under strain. Moreover, vaccine inequality during a global pandemic is a moral and a public health failure. Although the virus might not discriminate, our society does. These are just a few examples of some public health challenges that have come to light as we fight the pandemic. But, I am hopeful that our hardships of today has made use stronger in addressing the challenges of tomorrow.
As the class of 2021, you have already begun taking up this challenge through your learning, work, community service, and advocacy. I believe that you will continue to lead us to a healthier and more equitable future. So, keep learning and keep thinking with us, and become a wiser leader in your field. Leonardo da Vinci said, "Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets."
Congratulations again on your impressive accomplishments. I hope you will keep in touch, and we all look forward to hearing about your future successes and accomplishments. I wish you all the best.
