A joint research project between Dr. Emilie Matsumoto-Takahashi, junior associate professor and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) was described in Tropical Medicine and Health. Tropical Medicine and Health is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research and reviews on all aspects of tropical medicine and global health (Impact Factor: 4.5).
Using Earth observation satellite data and epidemiological data, Prof. Takahashi analyzed the impact of deforestation on malaria distribution in Lao PDR, and obtained interesting results that contribute to the elimination. With global warming steadily progressing, forested areas are expected to play an important role in the incidence of malaria in Lao PDR. This is believed because malaria in Lao PDR is mainly forest malaria transmitted by Anopheles dirus.
