2023/May A joint research project between Dr. Emilie Matsumoto-Takahashi and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) was described in One Health. One Health is an international peer-reviewed, open access journal that brings together leading experts in virology, bacteriology, parasitology, and public health research to provide a platform for the rapid transfer of high-quality scientific knowledge about inter- and intra-species transmission of pathogens (Impact Factor: 9).
Using Earth observation satellite data and epidemiological data, Dr. Takahashi analyzed the impact of precipitation on schistosomiasis transmission and obtained interesting results that contribute to the intervention. The recent dramatic increase in precipitation has raised concerns about the increase of waterborne diseases such as schistosomiasis. The present study revealed that the number of schistosomiasis patients increases as precipitation during dry season increases, and suggested that intensive infection control measures are needed especially during this season.
