SAKAI Kotomi, Graduated MPH in AY 2020

I met my life mentor through my graduate school life!

I originally decided to enroll at St. Luke's GSPH because I had developed a strong interest in dysphagia while working at the hospital as a speech-language therapist, and wanted to conduct clinical research and present my findings internationally. During my time at St. Luke's I was awarded a research grant for development of a screening test for dysphagia using machine learning, and my results were published in peer-reviewed journals (Clinical Interventions in Aging, Stroke) with the guidance of my supervisor. Before enrolling, I thought that my career would only be clinical, but through these experiences, I learned that there are careers that can contribute to patient wellbeing outside of the clinical setting.
Currently, I am involved in the analysis of drugs and medical devices for health technology assessment related to government approval processes, at Ritsumeikan University. I would not be doing the work I do today without the epidemiology, statistics, health economics, and pharmacoepidemiology I learned at St. Luke's GSPH. I want to continue to contribute to healthcare as a researcher.
St. Luke's GSPH is the only place in Japan where you can study in an international environment while continuing to work. The faculty are wonderful and I have been able to meet my mentors for life. I recommend it as an educational facility for adults who have career aspirations that they need to meet while continuing to work full-time.
