In Gerontological Nursing, educational, research and practical activities cover nursing care for elderly people age 65 years and older. The focus is on people-centered care and includes health promotion intended to prevent the need for long-term care, nursing of elderly people who develop an acute need for care, as well as assistance to improve the quality of life of elderly people living with chronic disease, from the various viewpoints of nursing, advance care planning, end-of-life care, as well as health and welfare systems. Nursing care of elderly people is practiced in various locations including hospitals and other medical institutions, facilities for elderly people, the community and private homes, and the content and methods also vary accordingly. Research and practical advances therefore demand a wide perspective. Mixed research methods of both quantitative and qualitative data are applied to gain a better understanding of various phenomena. The master’s program is divided into the master’s thesis course intended to nurture researchers, and the advanced clinical practicum course tailored so that students can obtain certification as a gerontological nurse specialist. The doctoral course is intended to nurture independent researchers in the field of gerontological nursing. Either way, the emphasis of gerontological nursing is on clinical practice. Students have opportunities to join the research and other practical activities of faculty. Thus, they can explore the reality of what happens with elderly people and the role of gerontological nursing from a scientific viewpoint, and enhance their academic and practical skills.
