本学は1901年米国の宣教医師ルドルフ・ボーリング・トイスラー博士により創設されました聖路加国際病院に端を発します。トイスラ—博士はこの時25歳の若さで派遣され、関東大震災・第二次世界大戦等の困難に見舞われながらも、日本の文化や人々の特性を活かした病院運営をなさいました。良い医療は、優れた医師だけではできないと考え、日本の医療水準を向上させること同時に看護の質を高める必要性から、1920年聖路加国際病院附属高等看護婦学校が誕生しました。この時、受験資格を高等女学校卒業とすることに大きな論争がありました。しかし、申請応募書類は1,100通届き、25名に入学を許可したとあります。当時、高等女学校への進学率はわずか1.3%であったと言いますから、いかにこの挑戦が桁違いであったかがわかります。この先陣を切って進む文化は、本学の校風となって、100年を過ぎた今でも受け継がれています。

2023年5月新型コロナウィルス感染症は、インフルエンザと同じ第5類となります。感染予防に心がけながら、マスクなしでの学生生活がはじまります。一方、ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻が1年を超えて続く日々です。今この時も爆撃の中にあって命の危険に怯えながら暮らしている人々のことを考えると心が痛みます。皆さんには、紛争の背景を探求し、国際的な思考力を身につけ、世界平和に貢献できる人材になってほしいと願います。

一昨年、「聖路加看護教育の100年」という本を発刊しました。その中で、1995年3月20日に起きた地下鉄サリン事件の援助拠点としての記事が記されています。平日朝のラッシュアワー午前8時頃、地下鉄日比谷線内に化学兵器として使用される神経ガス・サリンが撒かれたのです。突然、築地駅から多数の人々が聖路加国際病院に運び込まれ野戦病院と化した外来・待合室・廊下や礼拝堂でした。何が起こっているのかわからない、原因も治療法もわからないカオス状態の中で、管理者・医師・看護師・薬剤師・図書館司書・受付・警備員・大学の教員等、一人ひとりが自分のできることは何かを考え行動していました。

そのエピソードの最後に、ちょっと嬉しい記載がありました。「ブルーのユニフォームを着た3人の看護学生が自発的に被害者に熱いおしぼりを配っていた」とありました。それは自分で考えて動くという「聖路加文化」の表れだと記されていました。

みなさんは、それぞれの思いでこの場所に座っていらっしゃると思います。
憧れの大学、第一志望だった方もいらっしゃれば、第二希望、あるいは第三希望で本意ではないけれどここに座っている方もあるでしょう。皆さんがこのキリスト教を建学の精神にもつ場所で学ぶことが神様の計画であるのなら、この場所でどのように過ごすのか考えてみましょう。一人ひとり、個々に与えられたギフト・賜物に気づき、大いなる計画への道を探すことができますように願います。

本学の図書館入り口に次のように記されています。

聖路加国際大学大学院看護学研究科ならびに公衆衛生学研究科に入学なさいました皆様を心より歓迎いたします。今年は、バングラデッシュ、米国、ルワンダ、サモア、ソロモン諸島、ミャンマー、ナイジェリア、そして日本各地からの入学生をお迎えしました。すでに医療分野での職業経験をもち、あるいは大学卒業と同時に、さらなる専門的能力を身につけようとなさる皆様の挑戦に拍手を送ります。
In this beautiful season of blooming cherry blossoms, I would like to say congratulations on your admission.
I hereby wholeheartedly welcome all of our new students of the St. Luke’s International University Graduate School of Nursing Science and Graduate School of Public Health. We are joined this year by those from Bangladesh, the United States, Rwanda, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Myanmar, Nigeria, and the various regions of Japan. I send my applause to all of you, both those with professional experience in the field of health care and those just graduating university, as you challenge yourselves in looking to gain further specialized abilities.

This University has its origins in St. Luke's International Hospital, which was founded in 1901 by the American missionary physician, Dr. Rudolph Bolling Teusler. Dr. Teusler was only 25 years old when he was sent to St. Luke's, and despite the difficulties he faced, including the Great Kanto Earthquake, he managed the hospital by taking advantage of the characteristics of the Japanese culture and people. He believed that good health care was impossible with only great physicians. Because of the need to improve Japan’s health care standards and, simultaneously, the quality of nursing, the High Grade Nurse Training School attached to St. Luke’s International Hospital was born in 1920. At the time, there was a large controversy to the admission requirement that required graduation from a girls’ high school. However, 1,100 (one thousand, one hundred) applications were received and 25 students were admitted. It is said that at the time, the rate of girls seeking further education in girls’ high schools was only 1.3%. We know from this just how difficult of a challenge this was.

また、聖路加国際病院は早くから当時どこも設けていなかった公衆衛生部門の活動を始めていました。それを当時の東京市に保健館として独立するように働きかけ、ついに1935年に保健館が独立しました。この地、中央区に設けられた保健館が、後の我が国第一号のモデル保健所となったのです。このように誰もやっていないことに挑戦し、先陣を切って進む文化は本学の校風となり100年を過ぎた今でも受け継がれています。
St. Luke's International Hospital had begun activities in a department of public health, which was not established anywhere else at the time. The hospital then lobbied the city of Tokyo to establish it as an independent public health center, and in 1935, the public health center was finally made independent. The public health center established in Chuo Ward became the first model public health center in Japan. This culture of taking on challenges that no one else has done and leading the way has become this school's culture and continues to be passed down even now, more than 100 years later.

In May 2023, COVID-19 will be classified as a category 5 infectious disease, the same as influenza. Students will begin their student life without masks while taking precautions to prevent infection. On the other hand, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has remains ongoing for over a year. My heart breaks to think about the people who are still living in fear for their lives in the midst of the bombing at this very moment. I hope that you will become professionals capable of exploring the background of conflicts, acquiring international thinking skills, and contributing to world peace.

皆さんがこのキリスト教を建学の精神にもつ場所で学ぶことが、神様の計画であるのなら、この場所でどのように過ごすのか考えてみましょう。課題や研究が思うように進まないこともあると思いますが、その時、思い出してほしいのです。ひとりひとり個々に与えられたギフト・賜物に気づくこと。そういう機会を探ることができますように願います。
If it is God's plan for you to study at this Christian-founded place, I invite you to think about how you will spend your time here. When your assignments and studies do not go as planned, I would like you to remember this. Be aware of the gifts that have been given to each of you individually. I hope that you will explore such opportunities.
